Answers to your Questions

Q: How do I make those colorful designs?  (top)

The basics: Hold down your 'control key' plus the 'k' key, both at the same time, release them both and then press a number from 0 till 15 (contrl+k [0-15]). If you want to add a background, just add a comma and a second number (contrl+k4,8 for example). Then just using the different signs from our keyboard and combinations of colours we can make beautiful designs For example to make a rose : ctrl+k4@ctrl +k3}------`--------

Check out our Colors Tutorial for more detailed instructions.

Q: How do I change the she/he in my popup?  (top)

First you need to open your popups editor. Mirc users press alt+p, then click on View, and click on Nickname. Once there scroll down till you see the line you want to modify. Once the change is done go to File/Save and then Exit.

Pirch users click on Popups icon, click on Channel(names list) and modify your popup there. Then click on Save.

For more info, visit our Popups Tutorial.

Q: How do I add a nickname to my popup?  (top)

To add a nickname to a popup we use Nickname view. Go to your Popups editor (alt+p), click on View and click on Nickname. Once it opens you write your popup. Remember the format is <menuitem> : <command>. For example: Hello : /me says hello

If I want to add a nickname I just add $$1 to the line. I will then have to right click on the nick to make it work.

For more info, visit our Popups Tutorial.

Q: How do I do the I am from with date popup?  (top)

I would open my Popups editor (alt+p), then click on View, and Channel. Once there I would write a Popup similar to this one:

Live: /me lives in (my country here) and the time is $fulldate

You can add the colours you like to that popup. Once loaded in your popups don't forget to save it File/Save and Exit. To make it work just right click on your channel window and select Live.

Pirch users just click on your Popups icon, Click on Channel (main window), scroll down till the end of the list and there write a line similar to the following:

Live:/say I live in (my counry here ) and my time is $fulldate
Remember to save it before exit.

For more info, visit our Popups Tutorial.

Q: How can I do colors or have the * in front of my line?  (top)

Just type /me and your sentence.
That is called an action sentence: /me waves hello

For more info, visit our Aliases Tutorial.

Q: I see !ping all the time, what is it?  (top)

That is a ping request. That is the way we use to find out how much time it will take the message we write to reach the other user. A normal time is 5-15 secs. If our ping reply is bigger than that we say we are lagged.

Q: How do I give someone a ping reply back?  (top)

Just type /ping nick

Q: I want to change my nickname, how do I do that?  (top)

Type /nick nickyouwant.
Nicks can only have 9 characters, and remember there is no nick registration on the Undernet. It is a 'first to come is first to serve' policy.

Q: How do I find out if someone is on IRC?  (top)

If we know their nick type /whois nick and look in your status window.

Q: My DCC isn't working, what could be wrong? How do I fix it?  (top)

Most dcc trouble is due to a misidentified IP.
  1. Disconnect from the server
  2. In mIRC, go to FILE\SETUP\LOCAL INFO
  3. Clear both fields and check the 'local host' box and the 'normal' method
  4. Disconnect
  5. Reconnect

Q: I want to go to another channel, how do I do that?  (top)

Type /join #channelname

Q: How do I talk privately to someone?  (top)

Double click on their nick or type /query nickname

Q: What is sound? How do I get it?  (top)

Our mirc or pirch allows us to play sounds as long as we have those sound files stored in our harddrive.

mIRC Users: To turn on sound in mIRC, go to file/options/sound requests and "X" all the boxes, also remember the directory listed below as this is where your wav files will be stored.

Play a Sound - mIRC

  1. In channel -- type /sound wavname.wav
  2. To yourself -- type /splay wavname.wav
  3. To a specific nick -- type /sound nick wavname.wav

Grab a wav -- type !nickname (of the nick thats playing the wav) wavname.wav. Example: !hobbit^ kewl.wav

PIRCH Users: To turn on sounds in pirch click on 'Prefs' icon ,there go to Media and check all the options there.

Play a sound - PIRCH

  • Click on media player icon

For more info, visit our Sounds Tutorial

Q: How do I leave a quit message?  (top)

Just type /quit message.

If you want to leave a permanent quit message if using mIRC, go to File/Options(alt +o)/IRC/msgs and write your quit message there.

If you are a PIRCH user, click on 'Prefs' icon , click on 'Misc' and write down your default quit message in the box below.

Q: How do I get a list of all the channels?  (top)

For (mIRC) -- type /raw list >5
For (PIRCH) -- type /verbose list >5 (NOTE if you use pirch98 you just need to type /list
For (ircle/unix) -- type /quote list >5 (limits your list to channels with more than 5 people in them)

Q: How do I put someone on ignore? How to remove them?  (top)

To put someone on ignore just type /ignore nick 3
To remove someone from your ignore list, type /ignore -r nickname 3

Q: What is the @ or the + in front of people's nicknames for?  (top)

Nicks at the top of the nick list with @ beside their names are ops. They help moderate the channel and are here to help. They can also kick or ban users if necessary.

A '+' in front of someones nick means they have a 'voice' on a moderated channel (where only certain people can speak). In #Beginner, it is a sign that while the person is not an op, he/she is known to the ops present and can be trusted to give reliable help and advice. They are ops in training or 'Baby ops'

Q: What is a netsplit?  (top)

A netsplit occurs when a server is unable to keep up communications with another linked server. This may be the result of all the traffic (conversations) being carried on at once.

Q: How do I find out who is in a channel without going in?  (top)

Type /names #channel

Q: How do I speed up my DCC?  (top)

For mIRC, check that in DCC/Options/Options you have the next parameters in the left colum 60/120/120, and that in DCC/Send you have 4096 as packet size

Q: How do I create my own channel?  (top)

Just type /join #channelnameofyourchoice

Q: How do I open a picture file?  (top)

You will find it in your mirc/download directory. Double click on it to open it. You may use your browser to view it.

Q: Where can I go to find a file someone just sent me so that I can look at it?  (top)

Look for it in your mirc/download directory. Also, if you know the name of the file go to start/search/file or folder, write down the name of the file and click on search.

Q: Where can I download mIRC or the mIRC FAQ's?  (top)

Here is the mIRC Homepage, or you can download mIRC from here: mIRC 32 bit OR mIRC 16 bit.

Q: How can I change the name that appears when I type /whois mynickname?

mIRC users, go to File/Options/Full Name, and change this to whatever you wish.

Q: How do I get into a channel that is 'Invite Only'?  (top)

You can try this: type /names #channelname and then message one of the Ops (@'s) to invite you in. They are not obligated to invite you though.

Q: I'm banned from a channel, how can I get back in?  (top)

If you did something to cause the ban, it's just best to wait out the ban until the time is over. If you never entered the channel prior to finding out you have been banned, you can 'try' to message one of the Ops by typing /names #channelname, looking for a nick that has a @ (Op) in it, and asking them about the ban. When someone from a domain acts poorly, the entire domain is often banned, and Ops are not obligated to undo a domain ban for one person.

Q: How can I be a +V or Channel Op @?  (top)

Becoming a +V or @ in every channel is a little bit different, depending on their rules and who is managing the channel. For the requirements here in #Beginner, visit this Voice Information page as well as our Op Information page.

Q: Where can I get a bot (W/X)?  (top)

Visit the channel #CService, they can help you, but best thing to do is visit their website and apply for the bot through there. Here is the CService Homepage with all the information you will need.

Q: How can I change my email address as it appears in the /whois mynickname?  (top)

If using mIRC, go to File/Options/E-Mail Address, and change it to whatever you want.

Q: I'm being nuked, what can I do to stop it?  (top)

Go here and download a free firewall called Zone Alarm. It is effective against nuke attacks, and will report to you the IP of the user. You can then write their ISP and complain. Just be sure to send along a log of the incident, the /whois of the user, and the /time.

Q: I need an IRCop, where can I find one?  (top)

Type /who 0 o -- then look for the nicks with a *H in their whois information. It means that they are *here.
